    Frequently asked question

    1. Is Diabetes curable?

In reality, there is no permanent cure for Diabetes, though for a period of time some patients may have normal blood sugar levels without treatment to eventually go up again needing treatment after some period of time. At Apollo Medical Centre, our Internal Medicine Doctor suggests we can control it very well with some healthy lifestyle changes such as a nutritious diet, regular exercise and proper medication.

At Apollo Medical Center, our internal medicine doctor advises each patient, If Diabetes is left uncontrolled, which can lead to many chronic complications such as Eye problems (retinopathy), foot problems, kidney problems (nephropathy), Nerve Damage (Neuropathy), Heart attack and stroke, Sexual problems in men and women and Gum disease and other mouth problems.

Type 2 diabetes can progress over time, making it more difficult for a person's body to control glucose levels. Many cells in the body become less responsive to insulin, called increased insulin resistance, and specific cells in the pancreas which produce insulin become deficient, called beta cell dysfunction. In such a situation, usually, a diabetologist or internal medicine doctor prescribe insulin for patients. When people don't follow a healthy lifestyle and take the proper oral medications or if their insulin resistance and beta cell dysfunction progress significantly, their glucose levels may deviate from their target range and they become no longer controlled with 2 or 3 medications requiring treatment with insulin. In Type-1 Diabetes, insulin is necessary from the beginning.

Foods with low glycemic index values are better choices for stabilizing blood sugar than foods with high glycemic index values.
Certain foods can help you maintain or reduce your blood sugar, such as Beans, Spinach, collard green, Mustard green, sweet potatoes, Berries, oatmeal, nuts, mushrooms, cauliflower, cherries, coconut, apple etc. Overall portion size to be watched at and have frequent small meals instead of 3 large meals. At Apollo Medical Centre, our Internal Medicine Doctor suggests, try to reduce carbohydrate and fat substituting with salads and vegetables with good quality protein.

Over time, high blood pressure increases the risk of cardiovascular disease such as heart attacks and stroke. Medicines can effectively lower blood pressure. At Apollo Medical Centre, our internal medicine doctor advises, by losing weight, eating less salt, and exercising more, we can reduce high blood pressure slightly. If it is not sufficiently helpful, treatment with antihypertensive drugs can be considered.

If hypertension medication is not taken for a long time, it will gradually go to an uncontrollable level, which will affect our health adversely. Uncontrolled high blood pressure raises many problems in our body, like heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, vision problems, impaired circulation to limbs needing amputations or surgery.

Fatty liver disease means excess fat in the liver leading to inflammation and damage to liver, also known as hepatic steatosis. Fatty liver develops differently in each person, and alcoholic fatty liver occurs(ASH) in people who drink more alcohol. Meanwhile, the non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NASH) develops in people who do not drink alcohol but have excess fat in the body especially over the central abdominal area in overweight and obese patients usually.

Fatty liver left untreated can progress to cirrhosis, which can lead to permanent liver failure. Patients who suffer in this situation seek an Internal Medicine doctor's help.

Doctors use blood tests, imaging tests like fibroscan, and sometimes a liver biopsy to diagnose fatty liver. Doctors may use the results of routine blood tests to calculate specific scores of the FIB-4 or APRI. These scores can help doctors identify liver fibrosis or scarring. In addition, regular imaging tests may help detect nodules or lumps in your liver. Liver biopsy can prove the severity of your fatty liver disease.

Asthma is a chronic condition which affects the tubes in the lungs. These tubes are airways which carry air in and out of your lungs. If you have Asthma, the airways can sometimes become swollen and narrow. It makes you hard when you breathe.

Asthma cannot be cured completely even though patients can remain symptom free for many months or years with precautions and treatment with inhalers. Asthma can be treated very well to give good relief when patients develop symptoms and to keep them symptom free with preventive treatment.

Environmental factors play a significant role in the exacerbation of Asthma.
Air pollution, Allergies, Cold air, cold or flu virus, some food, Smoke, Fragrances, and Sinusitis are the main causes of triggering Asthma.

Cholesterol is a waxy substance found in the animal-based foods we eat and in the cells of our bodies.
There are four main types of cholesterol in the body:

    1. High-density lipoprotein or HDL often called the good cholesterol, HDL helps to remove excess cholesterol from your body.
    2. Low-density lipoprotein or LDL: LDL is bad cholesterol. It can lead to a buildup of plaque in the arteries.
    3. Very low-density lipoprotein or VLDL: VLDL also tends to promote plaque buildup.
    4. Triglycerides: They are fats derived from the excess calories we consume. Excess levels can lead to heart diseases and pancreatitis

Even if you follow a healthy diet and you are not overweight, cholesterol levels in your body may increase due to genetic and hereditary reasons. Diabetes and hypothyroidism are the other causes of increasing cholesterol in our bodies. In all cases we need to keep them controlled irrespective of the cause.

If my cholesterol is not controlled for years, it may eventually lead to some chronic health conditions such as heart attack and stroke.
You can lower cholesterol through a healthy lifestyle, proper diet, and medications prescribed by your doctor.
